Fragrance Safety & Allergy Advice
Fragrance should feel enjoyable, comfortable and easy to use. This guide explains how to use perfumes, perfume oils, deodorants, bakhoor, incense and home fragrance products sensibly, especially if you have sensitive skin, allergies, asthma or irritation concerns.
Different fragrance formats are used differently. Always follow the product packaging and manufacturer instructions where supplied.
If you know your skin reacts easily, test carefully, use less product, and avoid applying to irritated or freshly shaved skin.
If a product causes discomfort, stop using it and seek medical advice where appropriate. Keep the packaging and batch details.
Using fragrance on skin
Most customers use fragrance without problems, but good habits help reduce avoidable irritation and make the product more comfortable to wear.
Before applying
- Read the label, box and any leaflet before first use.
- Avoid applying fragrance to broken, inflamed, sunburnt, freshly shaved or irritated skin.
- Avoid eyes, lips, mouth, intimate areas and other sensitive areas.
- Do not ingest fragrance products or use them as medical or skincare treatments.
- Keep caps, nozzles and lids secure after use.
Sprays, EDPs and deodorants
Spray lightly and avoid breathing in the mist directly. Allow alcohol-based products to dry before going near flames, heat sources, cigarettes, candles or incense.
- Do not spray near eyes or face unless the product is clearly intended for that use.
- Use body sprays and deodorants only on suitable areas and not on damaged skin.
- If the product is an aerosol, follow all can warnings and storage instructions.
Perfume oils and attars
Perfume oils and attars can feel more concentrated on skin because they sit close to the application point. A small amount is usually enough.
- Apply sparingly to clean, dry skin unless the product says otherwise.
- Avoid rubbing into irritated skin or layering several scented products if you are sensitive.
- Some oils may mark delicate fabrics, so allow the product to settle before dressing.
Patch checks, ingredients and reactions
This section is practical guidance only. It is not medical advice and it cannot confirm whether you have an allergy.
Ingredient checks
Check the product label for ingredient and allergen information supplied by the manufacturer. If you have a known allergy, compare the label with the ingredients you have been advised to avoid.
Terms such as natural, oud, musk, oil, attar or alcohol-free do not automatically mean allergen-free. Natural extracts and essential oils can also cause sensitivity in some people.
Patch checks
A small at-home patch check can sometimes help you notice obvious irritation before wider use, but it is not the same as a medical allergy test. If you have eczema, severe sensitivity, a history of reactions or a diagnosed allergy, ask a healthcare professional for advice.
Do not patch check on broken, inflamed or already irritated skin. Stop if redness, burning, itching, swelling or discomfort appears.
If you have asthma, eczema, fragrance allergy, very sensitive skin, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are buying for a child or vulnerable person, check suitability carefully and seek professional advice if unsure.
What to do if irritation or a reaction occurs
Most fragrance concerns are mild irritation or sensitivity, but customers should always take symptoms seriously and stop using the product.
Mild skin discomfort, itching or redness
- Stop using the product immediately.
- Wash the area gently with water and avoid applying more scented products to the same area.
- Keep the bottle, box, ingredient label and batch code where visible.
- Seek advice from a pharmacist, GP or qualified medical professional if symptoms continue or worry you.
Eye contact
- Rinse carefully with clean water.
- Do not rub the eye.
- Seek medical advice promptly if pain, redness, blurred vision or irritation continues.
Breathing difficulty or severe allergic symptoms
If someone has breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat or face, faintness, confusion, collapse, or symptoms that feel severe or fast-moving, seek urgent medical help. In the UK, call 999 if you think it may be a serious allergic reaction.
Reaction does not always mean a product is faulty
People can react differently to the same fragrance because of skin type, existing conditions, medication, environment, application amount, layering with other products, or a known sensitivity. A personal reaction should be treated seriously, but it does not automatically mean the product is counterfeit or defective.
Bakhoor, incense, burners and air fresheners
Home fragrance products are different from perfumes worn on the body. Use them in the correct setting and keep heat, smoke and fragrance oils under control.
Use only suitable burners or holders on heat-resistant surfaces. Keep away from curtains, paper, fabrics and anything flammable.
Burn bakhoor or incense in a ventilated space. Avoid heavy smoke build-up, especially around children, pets or respiratory sensitivity.
Charcoal, burners and ash can stay hot after fragrance has finished burning. Allow everything to cool before touching or disposing.
Keep home fragrance oils, air fresheners, burners, charcoal, incense and bakhoor away from children and pets. Do not apply home fragrance products to skin unless the product clearly states it is suitable for that use.
Keeping fragrance products in good condition
Storage affects fragrance quality, comfort and safe use. Heat and light can change how a product smells or performs over time.
Store carefully
- Keep bottles closed when not in use.
- Store away from direct sunlight, heat, radiators and flames.
- Keep products upright where possible to reduce leakage risk.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
When not to use
- Do not use if the product appears damaged, leaking or contaminated.
- Do not continue using after irritation or discomfort.
- Do not use on skin if the item is sold as room fragrance, bakhoor, incense or air freshener.
- Do not mix products together or refill bottles unless the manufacturer states this is safe.
